Tortoise Live from the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor [Listen 1:25:54] S02 Ep08 (Part 3 of 3)

S02 Ep08 (Part 3 of 3) - Tortoise Live in Ann Arbour

Interview Date: April 27, 2012 @8pm EDT

Bands and Musicians Battle Royale (Part 1 - The Attack of the Classic Rock)

It’s time to play battle of the bands. Choose which band or artist you prefer from the sides given, and back up your choice with reasons why. Debate with your friends when you've run out of religion and politics. The battles are obviously more fun with more people involved. Come up with your own for the next battle (you can post battles & your results in the comments). We start off with the most classic example and build from there. Enjoy.

The Beatles versus The Stones

The classic battle. The introspective artists vs. the bad boys. Tom Wolfe is reputed to have said "The Beatles want to hold your hand, but the Stones want to burn down your town."

Beatles versus Bob Dylan

Addictive melodies vs. snarling lyrical genius.

The Stones versus Bob Dylan

Dylan challenged the bad boy throne by going electric. Et tu Judas?

The Stones versus The Kinks

Before you say "No Contest" in favour of the Stones, consider that the Kinks had a resurgence around the early 1980's when the Stones were troubled with in-fighting and weren't meeting expectations. History might have played out much differently. Consider popular opinion and personal preference.

The Kinks versus The Who

The Kinks have the respect of many heavyweight bands who list them as an influence - a band's band. The Who take on all comers with outright energy and volume.

The Who versus Queen

This match-up could make top bill: the Who's unbridled energy vs. Queen's flair and emotion.

Queen versus Rush

An epic battle. This one, for certain, would be bitterly contested, complex, and very long.

Queen versus The Eagles

Queen brings heavy ballads and operatic passages; the Eagles come in with a quick series of successive hits.

The Eagles versus Bruce Springsteen

Battale Royale Americana. California vs. New Jersey. This fight wouldn't be clean.

Bruce Springsteen versus Bob Seger

This is another hotly debated match-up on American soil. Springsteen is a legend, but you can never count Seeger out. Springsteen may have more fans, but all of Seeger's are die hard. In terms of volume, it could be evenly matched by yelling fans.

Bob Seeger versus John Fogerty

You can never count Seeger out, and Fogerty never stays down for long. This battle would have to come by decision after going the full rounds.

John Fogerty versus Tom Petty

Fogerty keeps coming back, Petty is waiting with raw power, a surprise hook, and a different angle.

Led Zeppelin versus Pink Floyd

Heavyweights, and both with fervent admirers in their camps. Different styles, but equal measure in terms of impact in music. I think this battle may be the most interesting to hear played out.

Bonus Question: If you were forced to listen to either of these songs, which would you rather?

Rick Ashley "Never Gonna Give You Up" or Starship "We Built This City"
